Adro Puma:
Giving Time And Advice
At age 80, Adro Puma finally has the time to do the things she loves most. She swims. She walks. She works out in the Fitness Center. And she’s an active volunteer and a member of several committees at Vantage House. But what she likes best is venturing out and doing things with friends and family, especially watching her grandsons play sports. She also loves the theater.
A former office manager, she gives advice on choosing a retirement community freely to anyone who asks.
“Move in before age 75, so you enjoy all the amenities and activities and life,” she says. “Live in one building that has an elevator. You can walk today, but who knows about tomorrow. Don't choose a place that's out in the boondocks. You want to live in a vibrant community with lots of activities. And, if possible, make sure the community has three levels of care, from residential living to nursing.”
She’d also advise making time for fun with friends. Every year, she and some of her friends at Vantage House spend a few days at the beach together. “It's something we look forward to,” she says, “and, boy, do we have a blast."
