A Bit of History
After nearly two years of research and feasability studies, Columbia was chosen as the perfect location for a continuing care retirement community, and in 1980, our site was purchased. After several delays, construction finally got underway, and our first resident moved in mid-1990. We had our grand opening celebration on Oct. 15 of that year. Oct. 15 has been Vantage House’s official “birthday” ever since.

Our Structure
Vantage House is owned and operated by Columbia Vantage House Corporation, a nonprofit, non-sectarian, charitable corporation, overseen by an independent Board of Directors. Our board members come from a diversity of backgrounds and have deep roots in the community.
Life Care Services LLC provides the day-to-day management of Vantage House. Established in 1971, the Des Moines, IA- based firm is now one of the nation’s leading developers and managers of retirement communities.
Our executive director is Richard Baker, a graduate of the University of Virginia and a 20-year veteran in the retirement community and nursing home field.
The Type A Advantage
Vantage House is Howard County’s only Type A Extensive Contract Continuing Care Retirement Community. If necessary, our residents can transition from their residential apartments to unlimited assisted living or our comprehensive nursing care facility with virtually no increase in monthly payments, no matter how long they need care.
Residences
Vantage House offers a choice of 13 residential apartment models, ranging from a cozy studio to a deluxe two-bedroom to a luxurious penthouse. Most have balconies, and all have glorious views of treed neighborhoods or woods. Some even boast views of Wilde Lake and Columbia’s bustling downtown lakefront.
We also offer one- and two-bedroom Enhanced Living Suites designed to provide all the freedom and choices of independent living for people who need some assistance with everyday tasks.
Community
Vantage House is a warm, caring community where people of diverse backgrounds, ages and interests enjoy a wide circle of friends and activities. Our residents find genuine fellowship at Vantage House with so many interesting, talented neighbors. Most are 60 years old or older and enjoy the active lifestyle Vantage House and Columbia offer.
